One Phone Case. Endless Styles: Why Modular Cases Are the Future

What are the differences between silicone, TPU, PC, and TPE materials used for phone cases?

Phone cases are essential phone accessories that serve both protective and decorative purposes. There are many materials used for phone cases, and the most common ones currently on the market are silicone, TPU, PC, and TPE+PC.

【Silicone】

Many phone cases are made from soft rubber materials. Soft rubber offers superior shock absorption, providing better protection for the phone. Silicone is a common material for soft rubber phone cases. It features excellent elasticity, good low-temperature resistance, a comfortable and smooth texture, is non-toxic and odorless, highly eco-friendly, and offers a wide range of color options. Silicone cases are representative of mid-to-high-end phone cases. The material hardness is typically selected between 60 and 80A. The drawbacks of silicone include a somewhat thick texture, limited design options, a tendency to feel greasy, and slightly poorer fit with the phone body. Additionally, lower-quality materials are prone to attracting and trapping dust. The production and processing cycle is long, and the material is difficult to recycle and reuse.

TPU】

TPU is arguably the most widely used material for phone cases today. It offers excellent elasticity, resistance to deformation, and low-temperature tolerance. It is non-toxic, odorless, and eco-friendly, with good color compatibility, superior adhesion, low viscosity, excellent flexural resistance, outstanding abrasion resistance, high gloss, and superior weather resistance. TPU is relatively affordable, easy to process, has a short production cycle, and allows for the recycling and reuse of scrap material. Common hardness ranges from 85 to 95 Shore A. The drawbacks of TPU phone cases include a somewhat stiff feel, susceptibility to deformation, and a lack of the soft, tactile sensation found in silicone. TPU can be made highly transparent, whereas silicone cannot. It is precisely this transparency that makes TPU popular among users today. Furthermore, there is a wide variety of high-end TPU products available, offering greater choice and more diverse patterns than silicone.

PC】

PC phone case material offers excellent light transmission, high hardness, impact resistance, and is lightweight and thin, with good strength and toughness. Its disadvantages include poor scratch resistance and susceptibility to strong acids, strong alkalis, and UV rays. PC phone cases differ from silicone and TPU cases in that they are rigid. PC plastic offers excellent toughness and light transmission. Pure PC plastic comes in various colors, including clear, black, and blue, all of which look quite good; however, the surface is prone to scratches.

TPE】

Composite phone cases typically combine soft rubber with hard plastic. This is usually achieved by bonding soft TPE to the surface of hard plastic (such as PC or PC+ABS) through secondary injection molding (or two-color injection molding). This gives the phone case dual characteristics of both rigidity and flexibility. Common types of these cases include frame-style cases and full-body cases. Composite phone cases typically use TPE with a hardness of 65–70 Shore A. Additionally, the adhesion between TPE and PC or PC+ABS is a key consideration. In addition to TPE-composite-PC phone cases, there are also TPE-composite-TPU phone cases, which address the shortcoming of TPU—excellent elasticity but a less-than-ideal tactile feel.

TPE Manufacturer Summary: From a cost perspective, TPU cases offer the best value. From a fashion perspective, TPE/PC composite cases better showcase individuality and taste. Of course, silicone cases provide a very comfortable user experience. SEBS-based TPE, after modification, serves as the preferred soft material for composite phone cases.
